Roopkund Trek

The Roopkund Trek is an 9-day journey into the heart of the Garhwal Himalayas that reads like a high-altitude thriller. It offers a rare, dramatic progression: the trail begins in deep, ancient oak forests, opens into India's most expansive alpine meadows, and ultimately culminates at a frozen crater guarding a 1,200-year-old secret.

The Three-Part Journey

• The Forests & Meadows: The trail climbs steeply through ancient oak and rhododendron canopies before breaking out onto Ali and Bedni Bugyal. These sprawling, velvet-green carpets are among Asia's highest alpine meadows, offering endless views under the imposing, 23,360-foot shadow of Mount Trishul.

• The High Alpine: Pushing past 13,000 feet, the landscape turns severe. The soft greens abruptly surrender to stark, jagged moraine, thin air, and packed ice as you enter the domain of the high peaks.

• Skeleton Lake: At 16,499 feet lies the frozen, steep-walled crater of Roopkund. When the summer ice thaws, it reveals its macabre secret: the scattered bones of over 300 people. Dating back to the 9th century, DNA reveals these victims belonged to highly distinct genetic groups (including Mediterranean travelers) who died simultaneously, likely caught exposed on the ridge in a catastrophic hailstorm.
